In a separate announcement on Tuesday, the company announced the launch of its first generic version of Prilosec, the world's top-selling prescription drug. In the latest instance, a new prescription drug, Nexium, will be priced from $2.90 to $8.50 per tablet.
It's also announced that Nexium and Prilosec are expected to be available in the US in the second half of this year. AstraZeneca has also announced that it is preparing to launch an additional generic version of the company's blockbuster medication, Prevacid.
“Nexium and Prilosec are the new standard of care for managing heartburn,” AstraZeneca Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Pascal Soriot told Bloomberg. “Both Nexium and Prilosec are indicated to reduce the risk of experiencing acid reflux symptoms, such as heartburn, in people with a history of previous heartburn or heart valve disease.”
Prilosec and Nexium both contain the same active ingredient, Prilosec, which works by inhibiting an enzyme called proton pump. Acid reflux symptoms are caused by acid in the stomach, which leads to frequent heartburn and acid regurgitation. Prilosec is available in the US and is also indicated in the UK.
The launch of Prevacid will come as a major blow to AstraZeneca’s patent expiries.
